The painting was for the National Fossil Day Art Contest. Smilodon is an extinct species of cat, commonly called the saber-toothed tiger. Since the species is extinct, I studied various different living cat species before deciding the pattern and appearance of the animal. I also incorporated the species' habitat into the background, as well as its skull. After all, it was for a fossil art contest. It won the Youth 1st Place and was exhibited in the Annual Conference of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, Los Angeles, 2013.
